The Imperial City

As the former capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is a major tourist destination and provides access to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and other ancient archeological sites in the region.  Located in the Southern Sierras of the Andes, its elevation of 11,200 feet causes many unfortunate people to experience altitude sickness.  Easy on the eyes, Cusco is a beautiful city with well-preserved colonial architecture that reveals a rich and complex history.  The city itself represents the center of indigenous Quechua culture in the Andes and continues to be identified for its indigenous population that often is seen in the streets in traditional clothing.  A city of contrasts of old and new, Spanish colonial buildings erected directly atop Inca walls line the square that sit beside Starbucks and KFC.  We enjoyed the city for a couple of days to let our bodies adjust to the higher elevations so we could be ready for our trek to Machu Picchu.

Claro que não poderíamos deixar de vir para Cusco. Antiga capital do Império Inca, localizada no vale sagrado nas  Cordilheiras dos Andes, com 3.400 metros de altura é aqui que começa o frio na nossa viagem. Não só as novas blusas, meias e tocas, mas o chá de folha de coca para ajudar com a altitude. Turístas para todos os lados fazem de Cusco um lugar muito caro, porém compensa estar aqui e ver de perto a beleza da cidade. Arquitetura colonial, e forte cultura indígena quechua que ainda é distinta nas ruas por ainda usarem assuas roupas tradicionais. Um contraste de novo e antigo, aqui também tem McDonalds, Starbucks e até KFC. Adoramos a cidade, mas estamos prontos mesmo é para ver Machu Picchu.
