Day 287: Halfway up the volcano

Nicaragua

Lookout at Concepción Volcano

Since Ometepe is a double volcanic island, we knew that climbing at least one of the twin peaks was an activity we had to take on.  Although it takes longer and is considered to be more difficult, we decided to scale the larger Concepción because we figured we have to “go big or go home”…  With a height of 1,610 meters, it’s very steep and symmetrical volcano and one of the most active in Nicaragua.  The bottom part is covered in trees and banana plantations that gradually lead to a dense, humid forest.  It took us a little over two hours to the reach lookout point at 1,000 meters and with the thick cloud cover, we had to use our imagination.  While Márcia had a snack and braved the gale force winds, I continued on with our 18-year-old guide for another 200 vertical meters and the difficulty level increased because of the near 45 degree slope combined with loose lava rocks.  He advised that the view from the top wouldn’t be any better and the remaining 400 meters would just be an intense workout.  So he talked me out of the final ascent and after the pounding our joints took on the way down, it was for the best.
