Day 231: America’s Pearl

Colombia

Cathedral of Santa Marta

Santa Marta is located on the northern Caribbean coast and is the oldest existing city in Colombia as well as an important commercial port. It’s on the tourist trail because its location between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the ocean provides an opportunity to explore the variety of wildlife and other natural attractions in the region. It’s also famous for being where the Great Liberator, Simon Bolivar, died on a farm just outside the city. No longer at higher elevations to mask the proximity to the equator, it didn’t take long for us to feel the warmth at sea level. The historical center is not very big and we were able to do a self-guided tour, walking to more than 20 different points of interest on our map in about 3 hours. We tried to beat the heat close to the small cathedral that sits in the middle of town, and is one of the oldest in Latin America.
