Day 198: Now, that’s a waterfall

Venezuela

Taking in Aponwao Falls

Even though we didn’t come to La Gran Sabana during the “rainy season”, there is still plenty of water to splash around in the dozens of rivers and waterfalls. The tallest one within the park is Aponwao and at 110 meters high, is truly impressive from up close. We had to ditch the sedan and rent a 4×4 in order to traverse the rough dirt road that leads to the indigenous village upriver that accesses the falls. From there we were accompanied by some local guides on a short boat trip and then an easy hike down the cleared trail path. As we approached, the roar of the rushing water gradually got stronger and we could sense the magnitude of the cascade. For a couple of quiet hours we enjoyed the cool, gentle mist as we awed at natural perfection.
