Day 27: Estamos na 25 Março?

Philippines

As you make your way from one side of Manila to the other, it’s easy to notice the two sides of the city that contrast each other in so many ways.  The first is close to our apartment in the crowded Malate district downtown, which could be described as rough around the edges.  Only three light rail stops away from our housing is the world’s first Chinatown and is where we found this giant street flea market.  It was non-stop action among the people buying, selling, trying on, yelling, bargaining, and hustling in general during the afternoon of a hot, humid day.  After battling the crowds and appreciating the bustle that surrounded us we cooled down with fresh coconut water that we drank out of a plastic bag…  The second side is in Makati which is financial center of the country and on the southeastern part of the metro area.  The streets are clean, the people dress nice, and the sense of self and sophistication is seemingly higher.  We sat in a trendy shopping area for a while watching people walk by and after a bit concluded that we prefer the “rough” side.  It’s alive and has personality.  The people are humble and simple.  The eyes that look at us are curious and not haughty and that’s probably why we feel quite at home in our adopted ‘hood in Manila.

  1. Hey, Guys,
You’ve gotten to see more of Manila than I did. Other than my preaching appointments in two or three areas of the metro, I really only got out and about a couple times for a few hours. Mostly, in the month I spent in the Philippines, my view of Manila was in coming and going to and from the airport to catch a flight to another island to conduct studies. Love your descriptions of the different areas.

  2. I love the fact that the people are simple and humble and still have so many things to share.
