Day 339: That’s a canyon

Mexico

Sumidero Canyon

Just a few miles outside of the capital of Chiapas, we got to fully appreciate the spectacular Sumidero Canyon from up close, on a boat right down the mighty Rio Grijalva running through it.  Amazingly, the lofty 2,600 feet walls reached even higher before a hydroelectric dam was created in 1981 which became one of Mexico’s most important sources of electric power.  After the river was dammed, the water levels rose considerably, creating an extremely deep and serene river that provides an ideal setting to take in the beautiful nature that abounds.  At the end of the journey, we approached the floating barriers as the river opened up at the dam where the water reaches depths of over 860 feet.  The peaceful ride was special and after seeing some sunbathing crocodiles up close, we tried to not rock the boat before we sped back to land.
