Day 329: The place of the Quetzal bird

Since Quetzaltenango is such a mouthful to say, the locals shortened it to “Xela” which is an abbreviation of the original Maya name.  The second largest city in Guatemala is located in the southwestern highlands at 2,200 meters and is a good base to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside scattered with mountains, volcanoes, hot springs, and rivers.  While indigenous culture has no boundaries throughout Guatemala, Xela seems to be at the heart of everything Maya.  As an important commercial city, people come from small villages many miles away to sell their handmade textiles and fresh produce in the market.  When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 1500s, the city was already 300 years old and its native allies had been referring to it as “the place of the Quetzal bird”.  Now, its more than 25 Spanish schools offer an ideal setting for people from around the world to learn the language.  The charming town gives good reason for its people seem to be proud of their city, its distinct regional culture, and its rich heritage.

Com aperto no peito nos despedimos do Lago Atitlán. Apenas um busão e já chegamos em Xela. Nome estranho, que na realidade é um apelido Maya, bem mais fácil de pronunciar, para a cidade de Quetzaltenango. Segunda maior cidade de Guatemala, friozinho perfeito, aqui é o encontro dos estudantes. Não que estamos procurando escolas para estudar, porque nosso portunhol funciona super bem, mas são mais de 25 opções de escolas de espanhol. No meio das montanhas, com 2.330 metros de altitude acima do mar, é possível sentir o ar mais rarefeito, e o banho quase pelando do hostel é super bem vindo. Além de sua linda história e característica Guatemalteca, um dos maiores motivos de estarmos aqui é escalar o ponto mais alto da América Central. E lá estaremos em muito breve!!!
