Cerro Chato is the younger, smaller, more inactive dormant volcano little brother of Arenal that sits to the southeast of its more famous counterpart. One of its more powerful eruptions paved the way for the water that leads to the La Fortuna waterfall. But the big attention grabber of the often overlooked peak is a 500 meter crater that’s filled with emerald colored water. It took us about an hour to hike up to the top through a steep and muddy terrain in a dense forest that was thankfully well-marked. After some quiet contemplation and a small snack, the clouds started to roll in and nearly covered the entire body of water. The sky really opened up as we started the descent so we reluctantly accepted getting drenched and took our time down the slippery, vertical slope.
Irmão mais novo de Arenal, ele é menor em tamanho, inativo, mais calmo, e com águas tranquilas. No passado, em uma de suas erupções, ele abriu caminho para a cachoeira que visitamos ontem, La Fortuna. Ao invés de larva, ao centro de Cerro Chato, as águas com cor de essmeralda é que tomam conta do pedaço. É uma boa caminhada para chegar até lá, uma subida só, mas enfim, conseguimos. Contemplamos, fizemos um lanchinho, o de repente o tempo fechou completamente e já sabíamos que o caminho de volta seria bem molhado e escorregadio. Demorou para descer também, e a noite já estava caindo. Molhados, correndo, com fome e cansados, chegamos ao hotel e melhor do que a atividade do dia, foi tomar um banho bem quentinho.
