Montserrate mountain is located at the eastern boundaries of Bogotá and at 3,200 meters, is the perfect place to take in a panoramic view of the city. To get to the top you can walk the stone paved path, hop on a cable car, or ride up in the funicular railway wagon. Not just for tourists, the Sanctuary of Montserrate was founded in 1640 and is a place of pilgrimage for locals and foreigners as well. It was established at the location to possibly take advantage of the tranquility and the serenity that nature provided in this beautiful spot. The top of the mountain is visible from just about any point of the city down below, so it has become a de facto symbol of Colombia’s capital. Thinking about the high altitude’s effect on our lungs, we opted to ride up on the little train and were able to enjoy some quiet moments overlooking the never ending city beneath us.
O Cerro de Monserrate é o ponto mais alto da cidade de Bogotá. Com 3.200 metros acima do nível mar, é aqui que as bogotanos rezam e os turistas observam a vista panorâmica da cidade. É lá onde a basílica de Monserrate se encontra e tem sido um lugar de peregrinação religiosa desdes os tempos coloniais e são pelo menos 16 milhões de anos de tradição. Na realidade queriamos fazer um exercício e subir caminhando, mas ficamos com medo de não conseguir respirar, então pegamos uma carona no teleférico para subir e o trem funicular para descer. São várias as lendas sobre esse lugar sagrado. Uns dizem que aqui dorme um vulcão, outros fazem promesas e sobem a trilha de olhos vendados, outros dizem que os namorados que visitam o santuário nunca se casam. Se é verdade ou não, não sabemos, e ainda bem que já somos casados!
