Day 149: A hike up Table Mountain

Probably the most iconic identifier of Cape Town is the flat-topped mountain that overlooks the “city bowl” sitting below. Table Mountain was recently named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and is known for its rich biodiversity. Home to over 1,500 species of plants, it forms one of the world’s six plant kingdoms all on its own. The easy way to reach the 1,086 meter summit is to hop in the cable car and make the ascent is less than 10 minutes. The road less traveled is by foot through the straightforward Platteklip Gorge and should take less than three hours if all goes well. We woke up in the morning and saw that the thin layer of clouds, nicknamed the “tablecloth”, that draped the top of the mountain the day before was gone so we headed out. It took us a little over two hours at a decent pace with some short rest breaks to take in the views along the way. We felt a nice sense of achievement as we looked down on the winding path that disappeared into the cityscape in the background. We encountered several people on the way up that were hobbling their way down and warned us of the painful joint pounding they were experiencing. That was enough reason for us to take the cable car which we crowded into with dozens of others. After walking back to our hostel, we didn’t need to count any sheep for our tired bodies drift off to sleep.

Para identificar Cape Town, é bem fácil, basta apenas procurar pela montanha em formato de uma mesa e pronto! Table Mountain foi recentemente eleita uma das Novas 7 Maravilhas do Mundo e é conhecida por sua rica biodiversidade. São mais de 1.500 espécies de plantas e árvores, além dos 1.086 metros de altura de pura aventura. Hoje acordamos e o dia estava lindo, sem nenhuma nuvem e com o céu limpo, não teria desculpa para não aproveitar a escalada. Se tinhamos a opção de pegar um bondinho e estar lá em cima em 10 minutos, sim tinhamos, mas mesmo assim preferimos ir pela trilha e chegar lá em cima suados e apenas depois de 2 horas. Mas valeu a pena o esforco viu, a vista da cidade é divina! E nem parece que você esta numa montanha, porque é possível ficar andando lá em cima. Degustamos nossa maça com o vento a nos refrescar, demais! Depois de descansar bem, não estávamos prontos para descer a pé então, o teleférico foi a melhor e mais rápida opção.
