Malawi is a small land-locked country in the middle of Africa that is famous for its fresh water lake that goes by the same name. In the middle of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Malawi is one of the African Great Lakes and is the ninth largest lake in the world. It is also the seventh deepest with a maximum depth of over 2,300 feet. Long and slender, it stretches about 365 miles from north to south and so is known as the “Calendar Lake”. It’s also called the “Lake of Stars” because of the lantern lights from small fishing boats at night that resemble a clear, starry sky. We settled into our small, simple, rustic cottage in Nkhata Bay and are enjoying the pool-like waters, blue skies, and beautiful sunrises.
Estamos na terra do sol nascente, como diriam os nativos em chichewa (língua nativa). Pequeno país ao sudeste da África, Malawi é famoso por seu grande lago africano localizado no Vale Rift na borda da Tanzania e Moçambique. Do outro lado se faz fronteira com Zâmbia também. Em torno de 2 milhões de anos, 560km de comprimento, 80km de largura, profundidade máxima de 700 metros é o único lago do mundo que consegue formar uma provîncia biogeográfica com mais de 400 espécies de ciclídeos (30% mundial estão aqui). Com mais de 12 ilhas ao redor, estamos exatamente em Nkhata Bay, e passaremos o meu aniversário e natal por aqui. Tudo é muito rústico, porém a beleza de ver o sol nascendo da nossa varanda não tem preço.
