Day 59: Extraordinary Javanese architectural complex

Indonesia

In almost any other country, the collection of massive Hindu temples called Prambanam would most likely be designated as a national symbol.  But in Indonesia the ancient monument is often overlooked by the awe-inspiring nature of nearby Borobudur.  The two temples are stark contrasts physically but interestingly, they have similar histories of construction, abandonment, and rediscovery.  The towering central structure in Prambanam rises up more than 47 meters and is called the Siva.  The local popular folklore is that there was a powerful man who loved a beautiful princess.  To refuse his love, she asked him to make her a temple with 1,000 statues in a single night.  The request was nearly fulfilled when she asked the villagers to pound rice and to set a fire in order to look like morning had broken.  After only building 999 statues but feeling to be cheated, he cursed her to be the thousandth statue.  So it’s said that the Durga statue in the main shrine is the princess that ultimately had her request fulfilled.
