Day 33: Hoopin’ it up

Opening night of the inaugural EL Nido Pumpboat Operators Owners Association basketball tournament gave us a good glimpse into the local community.  The month-long competition is a major happening in town and is the biggest event since Ms. El Nido was crowned last week.  A good number of the 30,000 people that live in the area made it out to share in the fun.  It surprised us to learn that basketball is the most popular sport in the country and we have seen numerous NBA jerseys exhibited since we arrived.  We definitely did not see any future NBA All-Stars though…  There is no doubt that size (or lack thereof) contributed to the up and down running style of play.  There were no big bodies to play in the paint so it was end to end action and lots of poorly executed fast breaks.  The random dogs crossing the sandy court wasn’t helping anyone either.  The best part was seeing everyone laugh it up when someone airballed a shot, or fell down, or threw a pass into the crowd.  It was all for fun though and we had a good time along with everyone else.

Hoje começou o primeiro tornamento de basquete entre os pescadores/ajudantes ou pessoas que trabalham nos barcos (tours) de El Nido, Palawan. Na quadra eles fazem o melhor que podem, as vezes é difícil passar a bola ou de acertar a cesta, mas o mais difícil mesmo é desviar dos cachorros que ficam passando no meio do campo. Devido a areia que se encontra no chão, muitos escorregões são  ínevitáveis, e a platéia vai a loucura, caem na gargalhada, sem dó. Mas como todos os Filipinos, eles colocam a amizade em primeiro lugar e ajudam uns aos outros a se levantarem, além de dar risada do próprio tombo. E quando o juiz apita, o jogo para na hora, mesmo se houver injustiça, eles não reclamam, e o jogo se torna mais amigável ainda. O tornamente terá duração de 1 mês e acontece todos os dias no centro da cidade. O primeiro jogo começa as 17h e vai até umas 22h. Nunca pudemos imaginar que basquete fosse o esporte mais famoso aqui nas Filipinas e por mais incrível que pareça os baixinhos se esforçam ao máximo para jogar. Se ganhar ótimo, e se não ganhar ótimo também, o importante para eles é se divertir…
