Ruins at La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná

Aside from its wonderful river beach boardwalk, Encarnación is probably best known for its proximity to the UNESCO recognized Jesuit ruins nearby.  La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue are preserved religious missions that were founded by the Jesuits during the colonization of South America in the 17th century.  They were developed to improve the living conditions of the natives and the missionaries passed on knowledge about religion as well as public order, culture, education and society.  After 150 years the ruling Spanish began to see the Jesuits as a threat, as they were growing in number and amassing wealth, and had the Jesuits expelled in 1767.  So they had to leave behind the 30 principal missions they had constructed and abandoned the native groups to fend for themselves.
