Potosí’s rich mountain

Sitting at an elevation of more than 13,300 feet, Potosí is one of the highest cities in the world and is known for supplying much of the Spanish empire’s wealth hundreds of years ago.  The Cerro Rico, or rich mountain, which overlooks the city was one of the richest in the world and continues to provide precious metal and mineral deposits, albeit on a much smaller scale.  The mines have produced more than 60,000 tons of silver and people used to joke that a bridge of silver could have been constructed to link the city with the Spanish throne.  The ore is still being extracted by miners in some of the most abysmal conditions and the methods to get the goods haven’t changed much since the colonial times.  Non-claustrophobic tourists can take a tour to see what it’s like and I walked away with a sad but real impression of the reality for the 10,000 workers who have few other options.

Uma das cidades mais altas do mundo, Potosí tem quase 4.000 metros de altura e é conhecida por sua riqueza debaixo das montanhas. Foi aqui que muitos espanhóis fizeram casas e levaram muitoooo ouro para a Espanha nos tempos antigos. Diz a lenda que foi encontrado no fundo do mar, um enorme navio com mais de 60.000 toneladas de prata indo a caminho da Europa. A montanha de Cerro Rico, dá juz ao nome. Com uma bela vista da cidade é uma das mais ricas do mundo. Nos dias de hoje, os garimpeiros ainda procuram e acham muitos minerios porém em condições como nos tempos coloniais. Sem opção de trabalho, é aqui que esses rapazes, no escuro, em perigo de vida, passam a maior parte do seu dia. São mais de 10.000 trabalhadores com olhar triste que só o alcool 95%  (que eles tomam de verdade) para acalmar esses corações e mentes.
