City of the Heavens

Ecuador

Welcome to Quito

We finally made it to Ecuador, or the “Republic of the Equator”, whose claim to fame is straddling the middle of the world.  Quito, at an elevation of 9,350 feet is the highest “official” capital in the world and was our port of entry and first contact with the small, Andean country.  Aside from the thin air, our first impressions were that the city was clean and organized, the people calm and polite, and that we seemed to be noticeably closer to the sun.  The first city to be declared a UNESCO site, the historic center is one of the largest, least-altered, and best-preserved in the Americas.  It took a little time to get used to the high altitude and proximity to the sun, but being on the road again put a smile on our faces.

Chegamos no meio do mundo, Quito a capital do Ecuador.

Delicious Fanesca

Since we arrived to the Catholic dominated country just before Easter, Holy Week celebrations were in full swing.  For us it meant the constant sound of bells tolling, thousands of people in the streets, long procession lines zigzagging through the city center, and the opportunity to experience a once a year culinary tradition, fanesca.  Ecuador’s traditional Easter dish is a rich, creamy soup that is loaded with so many ingredients it’s a satisfying meal.  According to the traditional recipe, it should include 12 types of grains or beans which are meant to represent the 12 apostles.  The herbs and spices, dried cod, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, fried plantains and empanadas make it a hearty and filling fare.  We happened upon our lunch by accident and were thankful we got to experience the unique and tasty dish.
