It’s not easy to sum up six months of our lives in city like Seattle. We knew our time in the Emerald City was going to be temporary so we were often in “traveler” mode, always up for some exploration. We got to know our short-term home a bit and it grew on us more than we expected. It was hard to say goodbye but we discovered that the city is known to lure former residents back so a return might be in the cards some day. Still, there are several things that stick out and will remain in our minds as we leave the city behind.
Parece outro dia mesmo que estávamos atravessando o país para chegar aqui em Seattle, e tudo passou tão rápido que nem vimos. Tivemos um lugar para chamar de casa por seis meses, porém continuamos em modo viajante, para aproveitar de tudo. Foram várias histórias para contar e lugares que um dia lembraremos com saudades. Será meio difícil sumarizar os nossos seis meses em so um post, mas vamos tentar.
Although Seattle is basically at sea level, it’s easily the hilliest city I’ve lived in the US. We took a “test walk” before my first day of work and I quickly realized that the steep mile uphill was going to get my blood flowing more than I wanted in the morning. Luckily, we found an apartment close by that just had a couple of mediocre inclines, but remembering “slow and steady” was paramount to keep the sweat from flowing. Along with the seven hills that the city lies on, there are numerous bodies of water in and around the area that create scenic backgrounds for the beautiful topography. The lakes, rivers, canals, and of course, mighty Puget Sound, give an impression of always being around water and provide opportunities to take a ride in a seaplane or live in a floating house.
Seattle é uma cidade cheia de subidas e descidas, diferente das que já vivemos (aqui nos States). E por esse motivo mesmo, conseguimos alugar um apartamento próximo ao trabalho de Bryan, e mesmo assim com a pouca inclinação, ele chegava lá suando! A primeira impressão que tivemos, que seria difícil correr por essas ruas, mas que se conseguisemos seriamos mais fortes. E é claro, a pergunta que vem a mente: – Nossa, até em volta dos vários lagos que existem por ai, tem altos e baixo??? E a resposta é: Yes! Mas, não é todos os dias que podemos correr/caminhar ao redor de um lago tão conhecido tão lindo que tem casas flutuantes para apreciarmos, como o Lake Union. Quem sabe não poderíamos até encontrar Tom Hanks, alí numa daquelas varandas pensando no quanto amava a mulher que se foi (aqui nesse lugar foi gravado o filme Sleepless in Seattle). Ou para os mais preguiçosos, que não querem caminhar, podem pegar um hidroavião e conhecer a cidade por um outro lado (um passeio sai em torno de $150 por uma hora).
Mountains abound and the Olympics on the Olympic Peninsula to the west provide a natural backdrop for some quality sunset painting like pictures. Sitting to the east of the city are the Cascades which offer outdoor activity opportunities all year round. We hit the slopes a handful of times and Márcia picked up snowboarding like a natural. We even introduced our friend, Alê, to snow when he came to visit. It was funny watching him fly down the bunny slope like a madman before our more experienced Coloradan resident friend, Micah, could explain the basics of controlled stopping. Amateurs for sure, we had lots of laughs and enjoyed the good times with friends.
Com tantas montanhas para todos os lados, e tão próximas a nós, impossível não visitá-las. Oportunidade única de aprender um novo esporte de inverno. Nosso amigo Micah e Bryan se divertem esquiando e eu começo a nova aventura em aprender snowboarding. Difícil, porém depois de algumas aulas, já consigo até descer uma ladeira, dar umas voltinhas, mas na hora da paradinha, ainda bem que a neve é bem macia! Mais que especial foi ter nosso amigo Ale nos visitando dando um show nos estudantes, nem precisou de aulas para aproveitar a neve pela primeira vez.
The entertainment business has long been influenced by and involved with the ever creative and inspiring city in the Pacific Northwest. The list of famous musicians with Seattle roots is long and ranges from Jimi Hendrix to the 90’s Grunge bands to Kenny G. One of the best concerts we’ve ever seen was the local hip hop scene’s most recent success story, Macklemore. With recognizable landmarks like Pike Place Market, dozens of TV shows and movies utilize the city as a picturesque backdrop for their eager viewers as well.
Foo Fighters, Jimi Hendrix, Kenny G., Macklemore (melhor show que já fomos!!!), Nirvana, Pearl Jam, e assim vai longe a lista de pessoas famosas que cresceram, tocaram muita música boa aqui em Seattle e cairam no mundo. Sem contar que muitas pessoas associam famoso show Grey’s Anatomy com a cidade pois, Pike Market (que e o mercadao de peixe, condimentos, frutas e muitas outras coisas) sempre aparece na TV.
Probably the most famous point of interest that punctuates the skyline is the Space Needle. The observation tower is over 600 feet high and offers one of a kind views of downtown, Elliott Bay, and the surrounding mountains and islands. It also welcomed me home from work everyday because it’s a straight downhill shot from our apartment.
Impossível passar por Seattle e não ver o Space Needle de longe. Bem ao centro da cidade, um dos pontos turísticos mais importantes, esse observatório de 184 metros de altura é da onde pode-se ver a cidade de cabo a rabo. São tantos lagos que os bairros são distintamente divididos por eles. Os parques, o verde é predominante e cobre a cidade. Mais legal ainda é ter essa visão do nosso apartamento!
The Seattle weatherman must feel like it’s Groundhog Day during the fall and winter months because most days are cloudy with a chance of rain. With a reputation of wet, gloomy days, locals are quick to point out that Portland actually receives more annual precipitation by volume even though it does rain/sleet/snow/hail in Seattle more than 150 days a year. Our six months in the city overlapped with the worst period weatherwise and we arrived for short, grey, fall and winter days and left just as the sun was starting to regularly appear and the days were getting longer. Just like in Chicago, locals claim the fantastic summers make the other months of the year bearable.
Falando em tempo, dizem os locais que Seattle é a terra da chuva, e que aqui chove em torno de 300 dias por ano e o sol quase nunca sai. Acrescentam ainda que o verão é a melhor época do ano, como em todo lugar do mundo. Chegamos no final do outono, pegamos todo o inverno e saímos no começo da primavera e já prontos com a capa de chuva (porque quem é Seattleite de verdade não usa guarda chuva). Maioria do tempo que estivemos aqui a temperatura (perfeita para mim, super fresquinho) em torno de 7C-15C. Chove mesmo, porém é uma chuvinha fraca e que depois de 10 minutinhos e pronto, já parou. Plantas, árvores, e vegetações, agradecem, além do nosso aparelho respiratório pela humidade. Nosso amigo sol, sim, poderia aparecer mais vezes, mas ele não nos esqueçeu. Neve??? Aqui na cidade foi apenas um dia em plenos seis meses, excelente! Nem se compara com o frio de Chicago.
With all of the street dwellers and alternative types roaming around, we realized that Seattle is the end of the line for many and there are no more stops on the road to nowhere. It wasn’t just people having serious conversations with themselves, although we did see that a lot. Several people would be in heated verbal arguments and one guy even took out his aggression on his invisible nemesis. It was funny/frightening to watch the man pick up, slam down, bend over to point and scold someone who did not exist. “Spare change?” was the most common question we heard on the streets from all sorts o people. One guy got creative and was offering to be kicked in the groin area for $20 and although it was tempting, we declined.
E por essa temperatura ser tão agradável, atrai muitos mendigos/rippies/pedintes a vir explorar a costa do país. Eles estão em todos os lugares, principalmente quando você anda em downtown, bem no coração de Seattle, é importante estar alerta com essa galerinha que domina as praças pedindo dinheiro, ou inventando histórias para conseguir um trocado. Além de falarem sozinhos, brigam com o invisível e é até engraçado de ver. Outro dia mesmo, tinha um rapaz com uma placa falando que receberia um chute la naquele lugar por apenas $20… loucura, loucura, loucura!
Outra coisa interessante sobre esta cidade, mas acreditamos ser uma coisa das pessoas que vivem na costa oeste, é a diversidade. Eles não estão nem aí para a hora do Brasil, literalmente. Desde o jeito de se vestir (super alternativo) até na maneira em tratar os outros. Bom dia, boa tarde, quando entrar no elevador, não existe! Fazer amigos então, só se conhecer o amigo do amigo… e assim vai. Detalhes pequenos, mas notáveis de quem já viveu na parte central do país e não troca por nada ter pessoas mais simpáticas ao redor… nada é perfeito, ne!
Huge, well-known companies like Costco, Microsoft, Amazon, Nordstrom, Expedia make the Seattle area their home. But the company that most famously embraced the city’s coffee culture and spread it around the world was Starbucks. Today the city has more than 420 shops so you don’t have to look to hard to find a spot to get your caffeine fix. People were kind of surprised that we aren’t coffee drinkers but they accepted us anyway. Márcia found a interesting substitute though, the cupcake. Interesting to me because she doesn’t even like cake and she managed to become addicted to the delectable delights. Stranger things have happened in Seattle for sure but this one we’ll take with us. We enjoyed the ride while it lasted and we know we’ll be back again someday to visit the beautiful and unique place that is now part of our story.
Estados Unidos, 50 estados, e mais de 10.000 Starbucks. Fazendo as contas, 200 para cada estado estaria de bom tamanho, mas adivinhe quantas só aqui em Seattle? Mais de 420 lojas/cafes!!! Deve ser porque a pioneira, fica aqui no centro da cidade. Já que não somos muito fãs do café, mas comida é com agente mesmo, conhecemos vários restaurantes legais, vários bares, e mesmo não sendo apaixonada por bolos, esse daqui me seduziu de uma forma, que jamais esqueçerei. Quando vir aqui para essa cidade linda, além de todos os lugares, parques, praças, lagos e montanhas, tem que nos prometer que virá comer no Cupcake Royale e que pensará na gente!!! Ahh Seattle, obrigada por compartilhar essa beleza, mistério e ser nosso cúmplice por esse todo essse pequeno tempo que passamos aqui, sentiremos saudades…
