Day 355: The White City

Mérida is the cultural capital of the Yucatan peninsula and blends a modern mix of traditional and cosmopolitan characteristics.  Steeped in colonial history, the narrow streets, broad central plazas and the region’s best museums make it an ideal setting to spend a few days and explore.  The beautifully tree-lined avenue Paseo de Montejo is the city’s own version of the Champs-Élysées in Paris and Europe’s architectural and social influence can be seen along the wide boulevard.  At one of the busy roundabouts is the Homeland Monument which displays an important part of the history of the Yucatan and the country through its carved stone surfaces.  The detail is impressive and the striking structure is a source of pride for Mexicans passing by.

Ai, nossa última parada em México, não queremos ir embora… Chegamos em Mérida. Capital da península Yucatan e uma combinação estilo colonial e cosmopolita de uma cidade relativamente grande. Repleto de histórias, ruas estreitas, amplas praças e com os melhores museus da região. Um das ruas mais conhecidas e chiquérrimas por aqui é a Avenida Paseo de Montejo. Quase uma Champs-Elysées, essa privilegiada passarela foi ocupada pelos ricos senhores há muitos anos atrás. O monumento da paz, mostra grande parte da história de Yucatán e os detalhes esculpídos na grande pedra é impressionante desde longe até de pertinho. Viva México!
