Day 320: Old Guatemala

Guatemala

Cerro de la Cruz in AntiguaThe beautiful colonial city of La Antigua is Guatemala’s unofficial tourism command center and a must-visit destination. The Spanish capital of the New World for more than 230 years, several earthquakes practically flattened the city so the seat of government was moved to Guatemala City in the late 18th century. Known as the “Old” Guatemala from then on, its well-preserved plazas, churches, cobblestone streets, and standardized pastel shaded buildings (property owners can choose from about a dozen different colors…) offer a great representation of the colonial period. Surrounded by three volcanoes, the UNESCO site has a friendly climate and is best explored by traversing narrow streets on foot. On a green hill to the north sits Cerro de la Cruz which provides some of the best views overlooking the city. With Agua Volcano rising high in the background, the point is perfect to squander some time contemplating the past and present of the city.
