Day 311: That’s a good looking bird

Sporting bright and beautiful rainbow-colored feathers, the scarlet macaw is a stunning creature to fix your eyes on up close.  The national bird of Honduras was a symbol of power in the Mayan world and its plumage had a significant value in rituals as well as trading.  Macaw Mountain is a bird park and nature reserve outside of Copán that cares for rescued and endangered birds from the region.  It also provides the opportunity to interact directly with the main attractions so we got to be the perch for their warm feet for a few minutes.  The strong, curved beak they use to crack hard nuts and seeds started to make quick work at the stitching on one of my sleeves before I knew it.  Surprisingly, they are not encaged and have the ability to roam free but choose to hang around because life is good.  The guide explained they don’t mind the meet and greets with visitors because they get a decent room and board in exchange.

Vermelho, amarelo e azul. A combinação de cores não poderia ser mais perfeita que esta para que a Arara-Macau fosse ser o pássaro nacional de Honduras. Com muita história para contar, para o povo Maya, no passado, essas belíssimas aves significavam luz, sol, vida e poder. E quase todos as esculturas tinham Macaus nela. Grande parte de sua espécie principalmente centroamericana está ameaçada é para isso que existe o parque dos pássaros. Há 15 minutos do centro da cidade, é possível visitar e ver as belas aves bem de perto. Muitos vem para cá para que possam ser cuidados, educados até que quando se tonem adultos estejam preparados e assim introduzidos a vida selvagem.  É estranho ver uns na gaiola, porém mais estranho ainda e ver os que estão soltos não voarem para longe. Segundo o rapaz que trabalha no parque é porque quem tem  comida, casa e carinho não quer ir embora. Tivemos a oportunidade de pegá-los, conversar com eles, e um deles até fez um burraquinho na camisa do Bryan, de tão sapeca.
