Day 301: Pearl of the North

Matagalpa is the capital city of the mountainous department with the same name and has diverse urban and natural attractions along with year-round spring like weather.  The city was built on a hilly terrain that is encircled by mountains and the cool climate was a welcomed change for us after feeling the heat of the tropics since arriving to Nicaragua.  Getting abundant rain throughout the year, vegetation is generally very lush and green providing a beautiful backdrop on the surrounding hills.  Coffee drives the economy in the region and is the country’s capital of the important export.  We haven’t had the need for a hot water shower for a while but the cool climate in this charming little town sparked the change.

Matagalpa era originalmente uma aldeia indígena. Os índios tinham sua própria língua e foi extinta desde 1875. O nome da cidade era conhecido como cerâmica negra, e até hoje é muito conhecida pelos seus belos artesanatos de barro. O indígenas eram muito temidos pelos espanhóis, porque eles eram muito corajosos, fortes e eficazes com seus arco e fecha. Foram-se mais de 300 anos de lutas para independência na pequena cidade. Hoje em dia conhecida como pérola do norte, por ter uma primavera como nenhum outro lugar no país, Matagalpa é a segunda cidade mais importante para a história de Nicarágua devido a ser agrande produção de café para exportação. Cidade encantadora e charmosa é aqui que iremos passar alguns dias e aproveitar o tempo fresquinho, quase frio, ah, sem falar no banho quente que será muito apreciado.
