Day 254: The M/S Independence

The Darién Gap is the section of thick, undeveloped jungle filled with FARC guerrillas that separates Panama and Colombia.  Not wanting to risk passing the “impassable”, our options to get from Cartagena into Panama were by air or by sea.  We read about the 5 day, 4 night boat journey that is popular with backpackers and spoke with a few people that had great things to say.  Since it ends up being just a little bit more money and the journey allows for lots of quality time at some picture perfect Caribbean islands, we opted to test our luck in the waters.  Although we have “cruised” on some bigger ships, we had never been on such a small boat for so long and were a little worried about which of the 30 vessels that make the passage to choose.  After doing some research and looking the sailing departures, we decided that going with the biggest boat with an experienced captain would be our best bet.  At 85 feet, the Independence, is the largest and self-proclaimed fastest boat to do the crossing.  Aside from the transportation, our trip includes our own little cabin, three meals a day, and as much desalinated water as we can swallow…

Cinco dias e quatro noites. Tudo que sabemos é que o barco tem uma boa reputação, então vamos nessa. Nosso pequeno cruzeiro será num barco a vela de Cartagena-Colombia até Carti-Panamá. Primeiro e segundo dia navegaremos em torno de 400km em pleno mar aberto. Terceiro e quarto dia já estaremos em ilhas panamenhas, nas famosas San Blas. No pacote, café da manhã, almoço e jantar com direito a lagosta e peixe, é o que estão no cardápio, estamos empolgados para ver como será! Água para beber só do mar. Isso mesmo, eles tem um processo de tratamento da água salgada que é possível tomar, vamos ver no que isso vai dar… Além da nossa cabine, existem mais duas areas onde podemos socializar com os loucos que estão nessa aventura conosco. Se o barco afundar já sabem que era uma vez uns 18 mochileiros e mais 6 tripulantes (capitão, esposa do capitão, 2 ajudantes e 2 cozinheiras). Com mais de 300 mil milhas de experiência, Independence MS foi nossa maior e melhor opção para cruzar a fronteira da América do Sul para Central. Então agora é só rezar e confiar no experiente capitão Michel e sua galera.
