Day 253: Not just an old pair of shoes

Colombia

Old Shoes monument

The “Old Shoes” monument is a realist sculpture that sits behind the San Felipe Castle and is a tribute to one of Cartagena’s greatest poets, Luis Carlos López.  In his poem, “To My Native City”, he serenades his beloved home, praising and adoring her and her history.  In the last line he describes how the city inspires his love for her just like the love one has for a cherished old pair of shoes.  Although we don’t feel as nostalgic about what we walk around in these days, we can appreciate his fondness for Cartagena.  The city and country won us over and the special place was a fitting stop as our time here comes to an end.
