Day 226: The most Colombian of Colombian artists

Colombia

Sculptures in Plaza Botero

Creating a completely original style that is instantly recognizable, Fernand Botero is a world-famous artist and native of Medellín.  His trademark work exhibits his constant search to present volume and the result is smooth, inflated, and some might say “fat” shapes.  He donated almost an entire floor’s worth to the Museo de Antioquia downtown which includes paintings depicting small town Colombian life, still lifes of exotic fruit, and rotund sculptures.  In front of the museum is Plaza Botero which consists of 23 giant sculptures that have had a positive impact on the area and the city as well.  He says that he fattens his characters to give them sensuality and is not interested in fat people for the sake of fat people.  Still alive and living in Italy, he just celebrated his 81st birthday and impressively continues to dedicate 10 hours a day to his art.
