Day 145: The Tip of Africa

South Africa

Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet

The Cape Whale Coast is a stretch along the southern shoreline of South Africa which has the largest concentration of Southern Right Whales in the world.  Humpback Whales are also frequently sighted during the peak season between June and November.  The whales spend the summer months feeding close to Antarctica and then migrate thousands of miles to South African waters where the sheltered bays along the coasts are ideal for mating and giving birth.  We pulled over at several of the “whale watching” spots hopeful we would catch sight of one of the gigantic mammals close to the shore but weren’t so lucky.  We made our way to the small town of Cape Agulhas which promotes itself as home to the southernmost tip in Africa.  It’s also the “official” dividing point between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.  The strong winds are indication of the giant wave (100 ft+) potential which have made sailors navigating around the rocky shores uneasy for centuries.
