Day 142: A Renaissance Man from the Old Country

South Africa

Why I oughta...

Of all the friends we made on the farm, we probably got the biggest kick out of watching, listening to, and working with our buddy Pier.  It didn’t take long for us to realize that he’s 100% Italian and a lot of the stereotypes are spot on with the wise man from Rimini.  He’s a mechanical engineer by profession so he knows his way around the tool shed and took on projects that required a bit more specialized skill than what we were tasked to do.  On the first day we met, he finished a small side project with one of the bicycles and looked at me proudly then stated with his Italian intonation, “Now, da brakes are ifficient”.  He has a “working” English but we know our conversations just scratch the surface of what we are sure is a lot of knowledge to share.  He made a pasta dinner for us and chuckled as we tried to convince him how great the stuffed crust pizza from Giordano’s is.  He was beyond confident the best pizza in the world is from its country of origin and invited us visit him some day to see for ourselves.
