Day 114: Bird watching

Malawi

African Fish Eagle

We read about the African Fish Eagles that call Lake Malawi home so we set out in a canoe one afternoon in search of the magnificent bird. They are normally found on large bodies of open water because as their name implies, they like to go fishing every day… They resemble the American Bald Eagle quite a bit and for non-bird experts like us, it would be difficult to tell the two apart up close. They spend most of the day perched in trees eyeing the waters and waiting for the right moment to swoop down and snatch an unsuspecting fish with their large, clawed talons. Its diet is not limited to just fish though, and these menacing birds snack on ducks, turtles, baby crocs, frogs, and even lizards. The two we saw must have eaten already because they were just hanging out in the trees, calmly eyeing the strangers who had stopped in for a visit.
