Day 98: The king of the jungle

Our driver broke the rule and left the defined 4×4 path so that we could get a close-up shot of a lion resting under some shade.  We felt lucky because we had just pulled away after getting a little bored watching and listening to another one slurp up water nonstop for about 10 minutes.  We recognized the unmistakable mane from afar and as we approached we could see that the big cat had just finished an afternoon African buffalo snack.  He looked content and was not bothered with the gawkers even though we had probably crossed into his personal space.  We made sure the windows were closed and gazed at the majestic beast through the open rooftop in awe.  We felt a sense of appreciation of how life must be good at the top of the animal food chain.  Most often the lionesses serve up the meals for the dominant males but they were no where to be found and this Lion King was all by himself, enjoying the sun after a nice meal.

Já imaginou ver um leão bem de perto? Só no zoológico e olhe lá… Nunca imaginamos que isso seria possível assim na selva aberta, sem proteção nenhuma, somente a van e mais nada entre nós… Nosso motorista quebrou a regra, saiu da estrada, entrou no gramado e tudo para que pudessemos chegar mais perto do rei da selva. Eu até falei para ele: – John, nossa máquina tem um ótimo zoom, porém ele nem me escutou. Com apenas 3 metros de distância, conseguimos ouvir a respiração cansada do grande gato que se divertia com um Búfalo Africano (tá vendo aquele negócio preto alí atrás, isso mesmo, era um Búfalo). Simba é demais! Ele nos olhava nos olhos, dava medo, mas ao mesmo tempo John nos tranquilizava dizendo que ele não ia fazer nada, já esta acostumado com os turistas curiosos, era só não sair do carro. O vento batia na sua juba e o olhar satisfeito foi espetacular. Os leõs vivem em grupos e geralmente é a fêmea que caça para o macho. Terminamos nosso safari com chave de ouro!!! Extremamente caro, mas dinheiro nenhum no mundo pagaria a felicidade em conhecer esse reino animal de tão perto. Jambo Quénia.
